Go on an Apology Tour, Not a Thank You Tour – Dr. Samuel Afriyie to Dr. Bawumia

In a phone interview on the Kessben Maakye Show, Dr. Samuel Afriyie shared his forthright views on Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s ongoing “Thank You” tour. According to him, what Dr. Bawumia truly needs is not a “Thank You” tour, but an “Apology Tour”.

He pointed to the controversial National Cathedral project as a significant contributor to the New Patriotic Party’s massive defeat in the 2024 election. Dr. Afriyie argued that the government should have left the construction of the cathedral to the Christian community, rather than leading it as a state-driven initiative.

Reflecting on Dr. Bawumia’s role in the previous administration, Dr. Afriyie remarked that while Dr. Bawumia occupied the office of Vice President, he appeared detached and uninformed about major happenings in the country. In his view, had Dr. Bawumia resigned at the time, it would have demonstrated courage and principle, positioning him as a more credible and trustworthy presidential candidate in 2024.

Turning to internal party matters, Dr. Afriyie praised Dr. Bawumia’s open acknowledgment of the challenges within the New Patriotic Party (NPP). However, he stressed that confronting and solving these issues should not be left to Dr. Bawumia alone; it must be a collective responsibility involving all stakeholders of the party.
