Ghana Reduces Passport Fees and Introduces Free Delivery

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced a reduction in passport application fees from GHC 500 to GHC 350. The reduction, approved by Cabinet, is awaiting parliamentary approval.

Speaking at the launch of the new chip-embedded passport, Minister Ablakwa highlighted the government’s commitment to improving security, facilitating travel, and modernizing passport services for Ghanaians. The new fee structure includes free delivery, eliminating the need for applicants to pay extra for this service.

Warning Against Fraudsters

Minister Ablakwa cautioned against fraudsters who may demand mobile money (MoMo) payments for passport delivery. He emphasized that such requests are illegitimate and urged applicants to be vigilant.

Launch of Chip-Embedded Passport

The launch of the new chip-embedded passport marks a major milestone in Ghana’s document security space. The passport features advanced security inputs, including a Micro Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and a biographical data-page composed of layers of polymer compressed into a solid substrate.

Chief of Staff’s Remarks

Chief of Staff, Hon. Julius Debrah, who officially launched the program, acknowledged the project’s long gestation period. He emphasized the importance of bold leadership in bringing such initiatives to fruition.

Hon. Debrah urged public servants to be practical, innovative, and solution-oriented in their work. He stressed that serving the nation is a privilege that comes with the responsibility to deliver quality services.

Implications for Ghanaians

The reduction in passport fees and introduction of free delivery are expected to benefit thousands of Ghanaians who apply for passports each year. The new chip-embedded passport and improved services will enhance the overall experience for applicants.

Ghanaians can now look forward to a more efficient, secure, and convenient passport application process.
