We were rivals but he has spoken the truth, I Salute Sarfo Gyamfi for declaring me as the Greatest Ghanaian Footballer ever – Mohammed Polo

Ghanaian football legend Mohammed Polo has expressed deep appreciation to former Asante Kotoko winger Sarfo Gyamfi, who recently described him as “the greatest Ghanaian footballer of all time.” Polo, speaking during an interview on Kessben TV, said the gesture touched him deeply,  especially coming from a former rival on the pitch.

“I salute Sarfo Gyamfi for speaking the truth. Even though we were rivals during our playing days, he has recognized greatness when he sees it,” Polo stated with humility and pride.

Known as the “Dribbling Magician,” Mohammed Polo lit up Ghanaian football in the 1970s and 1980s with his extraordinary flair, unmatched dribbling skills, and football intelligence. As a key figure in Accra Hearts of Oak and the Ghana national team, his name is still revered among football lovers across the country.

Sarfo Gyamfi, a Kotoko legend himself, shocked many when he recently declared on Kessben TV that “no Ghanaian footballer has matched the magic of Mohammed Polo.” The statement came as a surprise to some, given the historic and often heated rivalry between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

But for Polo, it was a moment of mutual respect that transcended club loyalty.

“He has spoken from the heart. Sometimes it takes someone who knows the game deeply to say things others are afraid to admit,” Polo added.

Mohammed Polo’s impact on Ghanaian football is undeniable. A member of the famous “Fearsome Five” of Hearts of Oak, he also played a key role in Ghana’s 1978 Africa Cup of Nations triumph — the country’s third AFCON title. His style of play mesmerized fans, earned him a cult following, and inspired generations of footballers.
