The suspension of Ghana’s Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama has sent shockwaves through the nation’s political and legal communities, sparking debate on constitutional limits, judicial independence, and the future of Ghana’s democracy.
Weighing in on the controversial move during a live interview on Kessben FM’s Maakye morning show, prominent legal practitioner Lawyer Ohene did not mince words. “If you are not scared of the happenings, it means you don’t want good for our democracy,” he declared, urging Ghanaians to take the issue seriously beyond party lines..
Lawyer Ohene expressed deep concern about what he described as an “erosion of the checks and balances that protect our democracy.” He cautioned that the executive branch exerting pressure on the judiciary whether directly or indirectly, threatens the integrity of governance in the country.
Throughout the interview, Lawyer Ohene emphasized the importance of institutional independence and constitutional due process, urging both the government and the public to uphold the rule of law in handling the matter.
