Ghana Rolls Out New Chip-Embedded Passport and Announces Major Reforms

In a significant milestone for Ghana’s document security space, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced the rollout of a new chip-embedded polycarbonate passport. This cutting-edge travel document boasts advanced security features, including nanotechnology and micro radio frequency identification (RFID) chips, making it virtually impossible to forge. The first chip embedded will officially be produced on 28th April 2025.

Key Features of the New Passport:

Security Features: Over 100 overt and covert features, ensuring the integrity of the booklet against conventional document crimes

International Standards: Aligns with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards, specifically ICAO Document 9303, for Machine-Readable Travel Documents (MRTDS) and ePassports

Biometric Data: Includes holder’s biometric data, such as fingerprints and facial recognition

Passport Reforms:

Decentralization: Passport enrollment and issuance will be decentralized across the country, with plans to expand passport application centers to the remaining six regions

Online Application: Integration of online passport application, payment, and appointment booking system to reduce congestion at passport offices

Tracking System: Introduction of a passport application tracking system to keep applicants informed about the progress of their applications

Cost Reduction: 30% reduction in passport application fees from GH¢500 to GH¢350, pending parliamentary approval

24-Hour Service: Launch of 24-hour passport service with door-to-door delivery, commencing on April 28, 2025

The Minister emphasized that the era of middlemen and unofficial agents operating within passport offices is over, and citizens are advised to directly interact with official channels and adhere to established procedures when applying for or renewing their passports. The new passport rollout is a testament to Ghana’s commitment to enhancing security, innovation, and international standards.
