Galamsey still a reality, but NDC government committed to fighting it – Akuoko Frimpong

Former Sekyere Central District Chief Executive (DCE), Akuoko Frimpong, has admitted that illegal mining—commonly referred to as Galamsey—remains an ongoing issue in Ghana. Speaking on Kessben FM, Frimpong said he would not pretend the menace has been completely eradicated just because the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is now in power.

“I won’t sit here and say Galamsey is over simply because the NDC is in power. That wouldn’t be honest,” Frimpong stated. “Galamsey is still happening, and we all know that.”

His candid remarks reflect growing concerns among Ghanaians about the persistent threat of illegal mining, which continues to devastate farmlands, pollute rivers, and damage the environment across many regions.

However, Frimpong was quick to add that the NDC government, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, is fully committed to fighting the problem head-on.

Akuoko Frimpong’s remarks have been praised by some listeners and political watchers for their honesty and realism, particularly at a time when partisan narratives often cloud national discourse.

With the new administration settling in and public expectations high, all eyes will be on how the government translates its commitment into concrete action to finally make headway in the fight against Galamsey.
