Ex-Kotoko Star Ernest Appau picks Golden Boy Abdul Razak as the best Ghanaian Player of All Time, Says he’s the African version of Maradona

Former Asante Kotoko player Ernest Appau has paid glowing tribute to Ghanaian football legend Abdul Razak, naming him as his best Ghanaian player of all time.
Speaking in an interview with Tony Muntana on Kessben TV, Appau drew a striking comparison between Razak and the late Argentine icon Diego Armando Maradona, describing Razak’s style of play as magical and ahead of his time.
“Abdul Razak played like Maradona,” Appau declared. “The way he moved with the ball, the balance, the vision, the intelligence — it was something else. He had that special spark that reminded me of watching Maradona. For me, he’s the greatest Ghanaian player ever.”
Known affectionately as the “Golden Boy”, Abdul Razak was a midfield maestro who starred for both Asante Kotoko and the Black Stars during the 1970s and 80s. He was instrumental in Ghana’s 1978 AFCON victory, a tournament in which he was crowned African Footballer of the Year — a rare feat for a Ghana-based player at the time.
Ernest Appau, who also had a solid career with the Porcupine Warriors, said he admired Razak both as a fan and a fellow professional. “When we talk about legends, we need to give Razak his flowers. What he did on the pitch, many people today still haven’t seen,” he said.
Abdul Razak’s influence on Ghanaian football remains strong, with many younger players and fans still watching old footage of his performances in awe. His ability to control the midfield, dribble past defenders with ease, and create chances from nothing made him a standout not just in Ghana, but across Africa.
Appau’s comments have reignited conversations among fans about Ghana’s greatest footballers. While names like Abedi Pele, Asamoah Gyan, Michael Essien, and Stephen Appiah are often in the mix, Ernest Appau’s heartfelt endorsement of Razak adds weight to the Golden Boy’s legendary status.
