There is no Juju in football, It is all about mentality; Juju doesn’t win games – Bernard Don Bortey

Former Accra Hearts of Oak talisman Bernard Don Bortey has come out strongly against the long-standing belief in the use of “juju” black magic in football.

Speaking in an interview with Kessben TV, the Ghanaian football legend dismissed the idea that spiritual forces determine match outcomes, insisting that success on the pitch boils down to mentality, hard work, and preparation.

Don Bortey, known for his dazzling skills and key role in Hearts of Oak’s glory days, shared his perspective on a topic that has stirred debates across African football for decades. For many, the idea of using juju—rituals or spiritual practices intended to influence match results—remains a deeply rooted cultural belief. But according to Bortey, those superstitions hold no real weight when the whistle blows.”

“Juju doesn’t win games,” Bortey told Kessben TV. “It’s all about mentality. If your mind is strong and you’re prepared, you’ll win. Football is played on the field—not in a shrine”

He emphasized that developing a winning mindset, training consistently, and trusting one’s abilities are the keys to success, not charms or rituals.

The ex-winger also encouraged young footballers to focus on their personal development rather than wasting time and money on spiritual shortcuts. He noted that relying on juju can sometimes create fear, division, and mistrust within teams.
