Seven Arrested for Illegal Mining in Upper West Region

The Upper West Regional Police Command has apprehended seven individuals for engaging in illegal mining activities on the Black Volta River at Chiantanga Community near Dorimon in the Wa West District. The suspects, identified as Sabugu Razak, Ibrahim Zuberu, Alex Amedzake, John Cobblah, Promise Dufe, Angelina Akpese, and Rebecca Tumawu, were arrested on Thursday, April 10, 2025.
Equipment Seized
The police retrieved ten Changfang machines, two unregistered PNE and Apsonic tricycles, and motorbikes with registration numbers M-24 NR 6010 and M-23-UW 4413. Additionally, two unregistered Haojue and Apsonic motorbikes and six student mattresses were confiscated from the site.
Police Commitment
The Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to cracking down on illegal mining activities in the region. The suspects are currently in custody, assisting with investigations and will face prosecution.
Illegal Mining in Ghana
Illegal mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” is a significant problem in Ghana, with over 85% of small-scale mining activities conducted illegally. This has led to environmental concerns, including land degradation, deforestation, and health risks. The government has implemented measures to curb the practice, but corruption and weak enforcement remain challenges.
