Fighting corruption and the formation of ORAL: President John Mahama is fetching water with a basket – Lawyer KK Serbeh

Lawyer KK Serbeh, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken a swipe at President John Dramani Mahama’s approach to tackling corruption in Ghana.
Speaking on Kessben Maakye with Kwame Appiah Kubi, about the formation of the Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) initiative, Serbeh compared Mahama’s anti-corruption efforts to the futile act of “fetching water with a basket,” suggesting that Mahama’s attempts were ineffective and unlikely to yield tangible results.
“President John Mahama is fetching water with a basket. His efforts to recover stolen funds are akin to trying to fill a basket with water—it’s a pointless endeavor,” Serbeh stated.
ORAL, which was initially intended to hold public officials accountable for misappropriating state resources, has come under scrutiny as critics question its long-term effectiveness. Although the initiative has had some success in raising awareness about corruption and calling for accountability, Serbeh argues that it has not produced the kind of significant action needed to make a real difference in the fight against corruption in Ghana.
Despite Serbeh’s criticism, President Mahama’s supporters defend his anti-corruption initiatives, pointing out that no administration, regardless of political affiliation, is entirely free from the challenges of tackling corruption. They argue that any effort to recover misappropriated funds and bring accountability to public office holders is valuable, even if the results are not always immediate.
