Severe flooding is likely to hit Greater Accra – Mahama cautions Ghanaians

President John Dramani Mahama has said that Greater Accra region is at risk of imminent flooding.

He attributed this to the delay of desilting some major drainage systems in Accra.

He has thus cautioned residents to brace themselves for a severe impending flood.

President Mahama made this statement
when he visited flood-prone areas in Accra on Wednesday. The areas include, Achimota Abofu, Mallam Junction, Kaneshie and Kwame Nkrumah circle, Ordawna – VIP station

“We are in April and the rainy season is about starting. We know that in May, June is the climax of the rains in Greater Accra area. These projects for desilting the major drains were given since last year. It is clear that all of them are behind schedule and from what I have seen, these drains are not going to be ready before the rains open up and if they aren’t, it means that we must expect that there will be severe flooding this season.

He continued by saying “I would have thought that the contractors are going to take advantage of the dry seasons and work as quickly as possible so that we would have been ahead with these projects by now but unfulfilled this hasn’t happened and so we just have to caution citizens of Accra that there is going to be severe flooding due to the delay of these projects ” he explained.
