Ghana Launches “Feed Ghana Programme” to Transform Agricultural Sector

Ghana’s Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has announced the launch of the “Feed Ghana Programme,” a comprehensive initiative aimed at transforming the country’s agricultural sector. The program seeks to boost agricultural production, reduce reliance on food imports, and create jobs.

According to Opoku, Ghana’s agricultural sector faces significant challenges, including production inefficiencies, lack of infrastructure, and limited access to essential inputs. The country’s heavy reliance on food imports, which totals over $2 billion per year, exacerbates food inflation and affects households.

The Feed Ghana Programme is designed to address these challenges through several key initiatives, including:

Advancement of SMART Agriculture: Launching Farmers’ Service Centres and Farm Banks to provide support services, training, and market access.
Grains and Legumes Development Initiative: Promoting vital grains and legumes for consumption, agro-industry, and export opportunities.
Vegetable Development Project (YƐREDUA): Implementing controlled environment farming and creating sustainable cultivation spaces.
Poultry Industry Revitalization: Increasing poultry production through partnerships with Poultry Farmers Associations.
Livestock Development Initiative: Boosting meat and dairy production to strengthen the national livestock sector.

The program also focuses on innovative agricultural financing, investment in infrastructure, and agro-production enclaves.

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to officially launch the Feed Ghana Programme on April 11, 2025, in the Bono East Region, Techiman.

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture will lead the implementation of the program in collaboration with other ministries, departments, and agencies. A National Oversight Committee and a Technical Implementation Committee will be established to ensure the smooth execution of the program.

Opoku urged all Ghanaians to support the initiative, which aims to enhance food security, revitalize the economy, and empower farmers.
