Adum PZ Fire: We don’t want “Gye Ko Didi” token aid assistance from Gov’t but assistance to rebuild the businesses of the traders – GUTA Chairman, Anthony Oppong

Following the devastating fire at the Adum PZ market in Kumasi, the Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA) has been actively engaging with the government to discuss how affected traders can get back to their businesses and restore their livelihoods.

Anthony Oppong, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of GUTA, speaking on Kessben FM, made it clear that while the association seeks support for the affected traders, they are not looking for “token aid” from the government such as food or other temporary assistance.

The fire, which ravaged a significant portion of the Adum PZ market, left many traders with their shops, goods, and livelihood in ruins. For the traders, the loss is not just financial but also emotional, as the market is their primary source of income. In the wake of the disaster, GUTA has taken a proactive stance in ensuring that the traders receive meaningful and sustainable support.

Anthony Oppong emphasized that GUTA’s primary focus is to ensure that the affected traders receive assistance that will enable them to rebuild their businesses and get back on their feet as quickly as possible. While he acknowledged the importance of immediate relief, he made it clear that the traders were not interested in temporary aid such as food or other token gestures.

According to Oppong, the traders are asking for more substantial and sustainable assistance, such as financial aid, infrastructure rebuilding, and possible tax breaks or waivers to help them recover their losses. These measures, he believes, will provide real relief to the traders, as opposed to short-term measures that do not address the root of the problem.

As the government and GUTA continue their discussions, the hope is that the traders of Adum PZ will receive the meaningful support they need to rebuild their businesses and restore their livelihoods.

The focus, according to GUTA, should not be on temporary handouts but on long-term solutions that empower traders to get back to business and sustain their economic activities. With the backing of both the government and the community, the Adum PZ traders are determined to overcome the setback and emerge stronger from the fire disaster.
