BLACK FRIDAY: Properties worth billions of Ghana cedis destroyed as fire guts Kejetia-Adum stores

Parts of the Adum Central Market in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital, have been destroyed by a raging fire.
Shop owners and traders are in a panic as the fire, which began at around five in the morning on Friday, March 21, continues to spread throughout the central business district.
Firefighters are fighting the fire on the scene, which is reportedly spreading to Phase Two of the market.
However, restricted access to the fire’s origin has complicated efforts to contain the flames.
Accessing the fire’s source has proven to be a significant obstacle for firefighters, according to a National Security official who briefed the media.
“The fire service personnel did their best, but the main problem is how to get access to where the fire started. If
they had a clear path, they could have controlled it within 30 minutes, but the structures around the area are
blocking their efforts. Some people were even disrupting their work, and looters took advantage of the chaos.
“The military had to step in and make some arrests. The fire is now moving towards the Roman Hill area and
Phase Two of the market. Firefighters are working seriously, but access is still a problem,” an operative
explained.
