JUST IN: “It was a mistrial” Kennedy Agyapong files appeal after US Jury ordered him to pay $18 Million for defamation of Anas

According to the Kessben FM’s morning show team, Ghanaian politician and businessman Kennedy Agyapong has reportedly filed an appeal following a US jury’s ruling that he must pay a hefty $18 million in damages to investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas for defamation. The jury’s decision, which came down on Tuesday, concluded that Agyapong’s actions and statements about Anas were defamatory and harmful to the journalist’s reputation.

This legal battle stems from a long-standing feud between the two men, with Agyapong being one of Anas’ fiercest critics. Agyapong has previously made several public claims accusing Anas of unethical practices and maligning his character. This has led to a series of legal confrontations, culminating in the defamation case in the United States.

The defamation lawsuit, which was filed by Anas in a US court, claimed that Kennedy Agyapong’s repeated accusations and comments about him were false, damaging, and led to significant harm to his reputation. According to the jury, Agyapong’s statements were not only damaging but also made with malicious intent, resulting in the large financial award in favor of Anas.

Anas, who is known for his hard-hitting investigative journalism, especially regarding corruption and human rights abuses in Ghana, has had a high-profile career, with many of his investigations resulting in major public and political consequences. Agyapong’s public attacks on Anas, especially his controversial remarks and the release of a video implicating the journalist in illegal activities, were central to the case.

The court ruled that the statements made by Agyapong were defamatory and false, leading the jury to award Anas $18 million in damages. The ruling was a significant legal victory for Anas, who has consistently defended his work and reputation throughout the trial.

Following the ruling, Kennedy Agyapong and his legal team quickly contested the decision, arguing that the trial had been marred by serious procedural errors, leading them to file for an appeal. According to Agyapong’s lawyers, the trial was a “mistrial” due to multiple issues, including improper handling of evidence and the conduct of the proceedings.

In the appeal documents, Agyapong’s defense team claims that there were irregularities that affected the fairness of the trial, arguing that the ruling should be overturned. They further stated that they believed the $18 million award was excessive and disproportionate to the claims made by Anas.
