Ghana Celebrates 73rd Commonwealth Day with Renewed Commitment to Unity and Cooperation

Ghana On Monday 10th March 2025 joined the global community to commemorate the 73rd Commonwealth Day, a celebration of unity, cooperation, and shared values among the 56 member states of the Commonwealth of Nations. The event was marked with a flag-raising ceremony at the State House, where Hon. Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence, delivered a keynote address.

In his speech, Hon. Dr. Omane Boamah emphasized the significance of the theme “Together We Thrive,” which reflects the Commonwealth’s commitment to collective action in addressing global challenges. He noted that the theme is particularly relevant in today’s world, where nations face common challenges such as climate change, global health crises, economic inequality, and social injustice.

Hon. Dr. Omane Boamah highlighted Ghana’s strong commitment to the ideals and values of the Commonwealth, including democracy, the rule of law, good governance, respect for human rights, and gender equality. He cited Ghana’s recent general election, which saw the peaceful transfer of power and the election of Ghana’s first female Vice President, Her Excellency Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, as a testament to the country’s dedication to democratic governance.

The Minister also congratulated the Honourable Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s immediate past Minister for Foreign Affairs, on her assumption of duty as the 7th Secretary General of the Commonwealth. Her election marked a historic milestone, making her the first African woman and the first Ghanaian to occupy this prestigious position.

Hon. Dr. Omane Boamah reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to working closely with the Commonwealth community to promote peace, democracy, and sustainable development. He expressed gratitude to the Commonwealth Secretariat and its member states for their continuous support and cooperation.

The event was attended by dignitaries, including the diplomatic corps, government officials, and representatives of civil society organizations. The flag-raising ceremony was followed by a reception, where guests had the opportunity to network and discuss issues of mutual interest.
