Petition to Parliament: Expunge “Inaccurate” Remarks on Dr. J.B. Danquah’s Legacy

A petition has been submitted to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, calling for the expunging of remarks made by Hon. Murtala Mohammed, MP for Tamale Central, about the late Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah’s legacy.
The petition, submitted by Akomaning Yeboah, Convenor, on March 7, 2025, alleges that Hon. Murtala Mohammed made unsubstantiated and historically questionable claims about Dr. Danquah’s involvement with the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) during a commemorative statement in Parliament on February 4, 2025.
The petitioners argue that these remarks misrepresent Dr. Danquah’s legacy and risk perpetuating inaccuracies in the official records of Parliament. They urge the House to direct that the remarks be expunged from the parliamentary records and require Hon. Murtala Mohammed to issue a formal apology, retracting his statements and acknowledging their inaccuracy.
The petitioners cite Articles 115 and 116 of the 1992 Constitution, which provide for the right to free speech and debate in Parliament, as well as the duty to ensure that parliamentary discourse is grounded in factual accuracy and historical integrity.
Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, is yet to respond to the petition. However, the petitioners trust that their concerns will receive due consideration by the Honourable House.
This development highlights the importance of accuracy and truth in parliamentary discourse, as well as the need to protect the legacy of Ghana’s founding fathers. The petition was received by the clerk of parliament Mr Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror on behalf of the Right Honourable Speaker Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin.
