Remembering the Dark Day: Convention People’s Party Commemorates 59th Anniversary of Nkrumah’s Overthrow

Yesterday, February 24, 2025, marked a somber milestone in Ghana’s history – the 59th anniversary of the overthrow of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the country’s first president. The Convention People’s Party (CPP), led by Chairperson and Leader, Comrade Wing Commander Patrick Nelson Sogbodjor, RTD, has issued a statement commemorating this dark day.
According to the CPP, February 24, 1966, will forever be etched in Ghana’s conscience as a “day of shame.” On this fateful day, Nkrumah, a champion of Pan-Africanism and African socialism, was callously removed from power by his own countrymen, aided by foreign agents.
The CPP highlights the numerous achievements of Nkrumah, including his efforts to liberate several African countries, his vision for a unified and self-sufficient Africa, and his implementation of various development projects that continue to benefit Ghana today.
Comrade Sogbodjor and the CPP are urging all Ghanaians to avoid any forms of overthrow or disrespect of the Constitution. They are also calling on the State to remove all vestiges of that shameful day, including renaming the Kotoka International Airport after Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
As Ghana reflects on its history, the CPP’s statement serves as a timely reminder of the importance of respecting democratic institutions and the rule of law. Long live Osagyefo! Long live Ghana!
