The Ghana Premier League is not a professional league, After playing in the Ghana Premier League, most players have no other option than to go and start life elsewhere – Awal Mohammed

Sports journalist Awal Mohammed, who works with Kessben TV, has raised concerns about the professionalism of the Ghana Premier League (GPL), one of the most prominent football leagues in West Africa.
He stated that the Ghana Premier League is far from being a true professional competition. According to him, despite the exposure and experience that players gain by participating in the league, most of them are forced to “start life elsewhere” once their playing careers are over due to the lack of proper structures and financial stability.
The Ghana Premier League has a rich history, with clubs like Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, and Ashanti Gold producing some of the country’s top football talents. However, despite the league’s significance in the region, the challenges that players face after their careers are over are becoming more glaring. Awal Mohammed, who has closely followed the league for years, expressed disappointment that players are unable to rely on football as a sustainable career in Ghana.
“After playing in the Ghana Premier League, most players have no other option than to go and start life elsewhere. It’s not because they don’t love the game, but because the system doesn’t support their long-term well-being,” Mohammed remarked.
