Council of State elections: “All the luxuries they are enjoying are not worth it. We want value for money” – Hon Daniel Kwasi Ashiamah

Hon. Daniel Kwasi Ashiamah, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Buem Constituency has called for a reevaluation of the Council of State’s job, arguing that the luxuries enjoyed by its members are not justified given their limited contribution to the nation. Speaking on Kessben TV’s popular morning show Maakye, Hon. Ashiamah expressed concern about the amount of public money allocated to the Council of State and stressed the need for Ghana to derive more value from the institution.

The Council, made up of a group of distinguished individuals, is mandated to provide counsel on a range of national issues. However, the MP raised pointed questions about the institution’s performance and its financial implications.

While acknowledging the importance of advisory bodies in democratic governance, Hon. Ashiamah argued that the current system does not justify the financial perks enjoyed by the members of the Council. He stated that the resources allocated to the Council, including allowances, perks, and the overall budget, should be critically evaluated to ensure that taxpayers are getting value for their money.

The MP further suggested that the Council should be held accountable for its actions, with clear and measurable results from the advice it provides to the President. He argued that if the members of the Council cannot prove the value of their contributions, the system needs to be reassessed.

Some have suggested that rather than abolishing the Council of State, there should be a comprehensive reform that redefines its role and structure. This could include a more transparent process for selecting members, clearer guidelines for their responsibilities, and more rigorous checks and balances to ensure they are held accountable for their actions
