Cholera Outbreak Hits Central Region: GAMLS Sounds Alarm

A cholera outbreak has been confirmed in the Central Region of Ghana, with 69 cases and 2 fatalities reported between February 6-8, 2025. The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) has issued an urgent public health alert, calling for immediate collective action to curb further transmission and save lives.

According to Dr. Gloria Amegatcher, Public Relations Officer of GAMLS, the outbreak is concentrated in the Effutu District, which has recorded 38 cases and both deaths. Other affected areas include Agona West, Gomoa Central, Cape Coast, and Komenda Edina Equafo Abirem.

Dr. Amegatcher emphasized that cholera is preventable and treatable, and urged the public to take the following preventive measures:

– *Drink safe water*: Boil or chlorinate water before consumption, and avoid untreated sources.
– *Practice good hygiene*: Wash hands with soap before eating, after using the toilet, and when handling food.
– *Use latrines*: Dispose of feces safely to prevent contamination.
– *Eat thoroughly cooked meals*: Avoid consuming raw or undercooked food, and peel fruits before eating.
– *Report symptoms*: Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms like severe diarrhea, vomiting, or dehydration occur.

Dr. Amegatcher also highlighted the critical role of laboratory testing in outbreak control, saying that “accurate and timely diagnosis is the backbone of outbreak control.” GAMLS laboratories are working tirelessly to support testing, but increased resources and collaboration are urgently needed to meet demand.

The association is calling for collaboration among government and health authorities, healthcare workers, and the public to combat the outbreak. Specifically, GAMLS is urging the government to strengthen lab capacity, expand vaccination campaigns, and accelerate public education on cholera prevention.

As the Public Relations Officer of GAMLS, Dr. Amegatcher is at the forefront of the association’s efforts to raise awareness about the outbreak and promote preventive measures. She emphasized that “early detection saves lives,” and urged the public to take immediate action to protect themselves and their loved ones.

GAMLS stands ready to support health authorities and communities in combating the outbreak, and is urging all stakeholders to act decisively to protect lives and prevent further loss.
