NUGS Urges WAEC to Address Examination Irregularities
The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has written to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to express concerns over examination irregularities and related matters. In a letter signed by NUGS President, Daniel Korley Botchwa, the union acknowledged WAEC’s efforts in safeguarding the credibility of examinations in Ghana but raised several issues that require immediate attention.
NUGS expressed concerns about the fair hearing of alleged culprits of malpractice, timely completion of investigations into withheld results, and the appeal process for guilty candidates. The union also questioned the policy of cancelling entire results for breaches related to specific papers, arguing that it may infringe on the fundamental human rights of candidates.
The union referred to the recent announcement on examination irregularities, which led to the withholding of results from 319 schools due to alleged collusion. NUGS urged WAEC to ensure that investigations are concluded in time for innocent candidates to meet the current admission window.
NUGS requested WAEC to provide clarity on several issues, including measures to ensure fair hearing for accused candidates, timelines for the conclusion of investigations, processes for appealing decisions, and the review of the policy on entire result cancellations.
The union expressed its commitment to working with WAEC to ensure justice and fairness for all students. NUGS President, Daniel Korley Botchwa, announced that the union would follow up with a visit to WAEC’s office to engage further on these issues.
The letter from NUGS highlights the need for transparency and fairness in the examination process. As the umbrella body representing over 13 million Ghanaian students, NUGS plays a crucial role in championing the welfare and development of students across all levels of education in Ghana.
