I support Asante Kotoko and England’s Chelsea – Ghana’s new sports minister, Kofi Adams
Ghana’s newly appointed Minister of Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams has shared his personal sports affiliations, revealing his support for two prominent football clubs—Asante Kotoko and Chelsea FC. The new minister’s comments have drawn attention, not only because of his dual loyalty to both a local and international football giant, but also because of the unique family dynamic he revealed. Despite his father being a staunch fan of the local football powerhouse Hearts of Oak, Kofi Adams declared his allegiance to Asante Kotoko, one of their fiercest rivals in the Ghanaian football scene.
Adams, who hails from a family with strong ties to Hearts of Oak, acknowledged the divide in his household. He humorously mentioned that his father, a devout supporter of Hearts of Oak, never missed a match, often expressing his disappointment when Kofi chose to support Kotoko instead.
In addition to his domestic allegiance, Adams also revealed that he supports Chelsea FC, one of the top football clubs in England. His connection to the club, which has a global following, aligns with his broader interest in international football, demonstrating his passion for the sport on a global scale.
While Adams’ football affiliations are well known, he made it clear that his commitment to the growth and development of sports in Ghana would go beyond just football and boxing, two of the most popular sports in the country. Adams, who has long been a fan of boxing, expressed his desire to broaden the scope of support for all sports in Ghana, emphasizing the importance of nurturing a well-rounded sports culture.
“My love for football and boxing is well known, but my mission is to make sure all sports in Ghana receive attention. It is essential that we give opportunities to all athletes and develop facilities to support different sports disciplines,” Adams said.
He outlined a multi-faceted approach to sports development, which includes not only investing in football and boxing but also encouraging participation in athletics, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and other emerging sports. As part of his plan, Adams promised to ensure that national teams in various sports are well-equipped, adequately funded, and able to compete at international levels.
A key focus for the new sports minister is to strengthen grassroots sports development across Ghana. Adams emphasized that his government would work closely with local communities to establish more sports facilities, training programs, and youth development initiatives. This, he believes, will provide young Ghanaians with the opportunity to excel in various sporting disciplines from an early age.
