YADD Ghana Commends President Mahama for Constitutional Review Committee

The Youth Alliance for Democratic Development (YADD) Ghana has commended President John Dramani Mahama for establishing a Constitutional Review Committee, fulfilling his campaign promise to review the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
According to YADD Ghana, this move demonstrates the President’s commitment to promoting democracy and good governance in Ghana. The organization also congratulated the newly appointed members of the Constitutional Review Committee, tasked with recommending measures to reset Ghana’s agenda.
YADD Ghana identified corruption and the structure of Ghana’s economy as fundamental problems, citing the need for constitutional reforms to ensure the independence of anti-corruption agencies and constitutionally independent bodies.
The organization proposed several key reforms, including:
– *Limiting the President’s Power of Appointment*: Ensuring that appointments are based on merit rather than party loyalty.
– *Independence of the Attorney General*: Separating the office of the Attorney General from the Minister of Justice to prevent partisan influences.
– *Reforming the Police Service*: Making the Police Service independent and impartial by removing the President’s power to appoint its leaders.
– *Empowering Parliament*: Preventing the President from appointing the majority of ministers from parliament to ensure the legislature’s independence.
YADD Ghana also recommended the establishment of a youth commission, provision of legal aid, and financial assistance to political parties from state coffers.
The organization concluded by reiterating its commitment to promoting democratic development and good governance in Ghana.
