CDS Africa Condemns Government and Police Administration for Failing to Act on Security Threats

As a civil society organization committed to promoting democracy and advancing socioeconomic development, CDS Africa strongly condemns the recent breakdown of law and order, which led to tragic bloodshed in Obuasi. It is alleged that a group of illegal miners (galamseyers) invaded the AGA premises in an attempt to illegally gain access to their underground mining operations, resulting in violence and the loss of lives.
The failure of both the Police Administration and the President of the Republic to respond to clear and repeated warnings has allowed marauding thugs to attack state agencies and private businesses with impunity, causing widespread destruction and undermining the goodwill of Ghana’s democracy—a democracy that the people of Ghana have enjoyed for over three decades.
The security risks were evident well before the violence erupted. However, the government’s failure to act on these warnings has directly contributed to the tragic events we are witnessing today. This is not only a betrayal of public trust but also an attack on the peace and stability that Ghanaian citizens have worked tirelessly to build.
We call for immediate accountability. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) must resign immediately due to the catastrophic failure in law enforcement and the lack of leadership in preventing these security breaches. The police have a fundamental duty to protect lives and property, a duty that has been grossly neglected under the current administration.
We also urge the President to take swift and decisive action to restore law and order, to rein in criminal elements destabilizing our society, and to ensure that such senseless violence is never allowed to happen again. The people of Ghana deserve better.
