Statement: CDS Africa Commends President Mahama’s Call for Immediate Probe into 2020 and 2024 Election Fatalities
The Africa Center for Democracy and Socioeconomic Development (CDS Africa) welcomes and strongly supports H.E. President John Dramani Mahama’s directive for an immediate and thorough investigation into the election-related fatalities that occurred during the 2020 and 2024 general elections. This decisive action marks a significant step toward ensuring accountability, fostering public confidence, and strengthening Ghana’s electoral processes.
Over the past election cycles, Ghana’s democracy has been marred by instances of electoral violence, with some of these events resulting in the tragic loss of lives. Notably, the 2020 elections were marred by multiple fatalities, with reports indicating excessive use of force by security personnel in response to rising electoral tensions. These fatalities, coupled with a lack of accountability for those responsible, have contributed to a culture of impunity that undermines the integrity of the nation’s democratic institutions. Similarly, the 2024 elections, despite high hopes for a peaceful process, were also affected by violence, further emphasizing the urgent need for a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the causes and perpetrators of these deaths.
CDS Africa strongly believes that justice and accountability are crucial for the health and vibrancy of any democracy. The President’s call for a full investigation into these incidents offers an opportunity to correct past wrongs, send a clear message about the importance of rule of law, and reinforce Ghana’s reputation as a leading example of democracy in Africa.
We call on the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to ensure that their investigations are carried out with the highest level of transparency, independence, and diligence, and that all perpetrators, regardless of political or social affiliation are brought to justice. It is critical that the investigation’s outcomes are shared with the public, demonstrating the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
In addition to immediate action, CDS Africa encourages the government to implement long-term preventive measures to reduce electoral violence in the future. These should include comprehensive electoral reforms that address the root causes of electoral violence, enhanced training programs for security personnel to prevent the excessive use of force, and a more active role for civil society organizations in promoting peace and civic education in the lead-up to elections.
As a long-standing advocate for democracy and good governance, CDS Africa stands ready to collaborate with stakeholders; government bodies, civil society, international partners, and electoral bodies to help develop and implement these reforms. Only through concerted efforts can Ghana continue to grow as a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous nation.
CDS Africa remains hopeful that this investigation will serve as a turning point for Ghana’s electoral processes, ensuring that future elections are conducted in a peaceful, transparent, and violence-free environment.
