Ghana Immigration Service Sets the Record Straight on E-Gates System Costs
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has come out to debunk false claims circulating on social media that the e-Gates System installed at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) costs a whopping $240 million.
According to the GIS, the actual cost of the e-Gates System is a mere $1.7 million, which is part of the larger “Immigration 360” border management system costing $94.6 million.
The “Immigration 360” system aims to automate passenger processing and data management at all 48 approved entry and exit points in Ghana. The system also integrates with local databases, such as the National Identification System and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, as well as international systems like INTERPOL’s Global Stop/Watch List ¹.
The GIS emphasized that the $240 million figure being circulated is actually the total cost of the project over a 10-year period, including maintenance and upgrade costs.
It’s worth noting that the e-Gates System is being implemented by Margins ID Systems Application Ltd, a local Ghanaian company, which is pre-financing the implementation cost and will be repaid from revenue generated by the system ¹.
The GIS has urged the public to disregard the false claims and to rely on accurate information from official sources.
*Breakdown of the Costs:*
– Total cost of the “Immigration 360” system: $94.6 million
– Cost of the e-Gates System: $1.7 million
– Total cost of the project over 10 years, including maintenance and upgrades: $240 million
