Ablekuma North and Okaikwei Central collation will not be accepted – EC
According to the Electoral Commission (EC), the compiled results of the last parliamentary elections in the Ablekuma North and Okaikwei Central seats will not be accepted.
The EC Chair, speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, clarified that the Commission made this decision due to anomalies found in the compilation and subsequent announcement.
The EC claims that although the winner of Ablekuma North did not include results from 62 polling stations, the winner of Okaikwei Central was declared without results from 31 polling stations.
National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidates were declared for both constituencies.
These activities, according to Madam Mensa, are “illegal,” and such pronouncements cannot be upheld.
She further mentioned that its employees made the statements in response to threats from party members.
“In spite of police presence at our regional offices, the collation process was once again disrupted and taken over by political party leaders and supporters and the results were declared for both constituencies without due process being followed.
“In the case of Okaikwei Central, a winner was declared without collating results from 31 polling stations. In the case of the Ablekuma North constituency, a winner was declared without collating results from 62 polling stations, this is unacceptable.
“It is important to note that the declarations made by our staff were made under threat, and Commission considers this as illegal, those declarations, as well as others that have gone on in other constituencies will not be upheld by the Commission,” she said.
Nine constituencies—Nsawan Adoagyiri, Ahafo Ano South West, Ahafo Ano North, Obuasi East, Okaikwe Central, and Ablekuma North—will have their results recollected by the Commission. Dome Kwabenya, Techiman South, and Tema Central are the others.
The current president and the president-elect were urged by the EC chair to strengthen security and provide a secure setting so that the EC could review the outcomes for the remaining constituencies.
