Government Must Avoid Past Mistakes During Change of Power – Lawyer Anthony Mmieh
Lawyer Anthony Mmieh, a Member of Parliament in the Odotobri Constituency, reflected on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the transitional team. He highlighted recurring challenges that have plagued past transitions and stressed the need for proactive measures to avoid repeating these mistakes and ensure a seamless transfer of power.
During a segment of the Kessben Maakye show, host Kwabena Owusu Dankwah discussed the pressing issue of government transitions with lawyer Anthony. Speaking on the matter, the prominent lawyer Anthony highlighted the need for the transitional team to work in harmony with the government. He emphasized, “The transitional team must collaborate effectively at this time to ensure everything runs smoothly”.
Historically, he said, outgoing governments have continued functioning even during transitions. However, issues such as employing new people and paying excessive sums of money have become a significant concern. These practices, if unchecked, could undermine a seamless handover of power.
Moreover, he pointed out that past transitions have not always been efficient. Once the transitional team concludes its activities, challenges such as mismanagement of funds and unnecessary payments to workers often emerge. Such practices, he stressed, do not foster progress and must not be repeated.
To address these issues, he called for adherence to legal and orderly processes. He stated, “The last transition was peaceful and free of chaos, which sets a positive precedent. We must allow the law to take its course this time as well”.
In conclusion, he reminded all stakeholders that a transition does not mean disorder. A change in government, whether welcomed or not, should not create confusion. Instead, it should serve as a demonstration of democracy and unity in governance.
As preparations for the transition continue, it remains imperative that both outgoing and incoming teams prioritize cooperation, transparency, and the greater good of the nation.
