CDS Africa Condemns Post-Election Violence and Calls for Immediate Action
The Africa Center for Democracy and Socioeconomic Development (CDS Africa) unequivocally condemns the wave of violence and destruction that has erupted across the country following the Electoral Commission of Ghana’s declaration of the presidential election results. These violent acts, attributed to some supporters of the Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), threaten the democratic values, peace, and stability that Ghana has painstakingly built over the years.
Since the announcement of the results yesterday, numerous reports have emerged detailing attacks on individuals, businesses, and public properties. Notably, the office of Hon. Ursula Owusu, former Minister of State and Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, has been vandalized, while similar incidents in Tepa and other regions have caused significant property damage and created a climate of fear and insecurity. Such actions not only undermine the democratic process but also erode the foundation of unity and tolerance that underpins our national identity.
Root Causes and Broader Implications
The underlying causes of these violent outbursts point to entrenched political polarization, misinformation, and an inability by some political actors to accept democratic outcomes peacefully. While electoral contests often stir strong emotions, resorting to violence as an outlet is unacceptable and has far-reaching consequences, including potential economic instability, tarnishing Ghana’s international reputation, and endangering lives.
CDS Africa reminds all Ghanaians that democracy thrives on the principles of tolerance, dialogue, and respect for the rule of law. Violence in any form is antithetical to these values and undermines the credibility of our democratic institutions. It is imperative for political leaders, especially within the NDC, to condemn these acts publicly and to take responsibility by calling their supporters to exercise restraint.
The Way Forward
We call on the Ghana Police Service and all relevant security agencies to act decisively in restoring order, ensuring public safety, and bringing perpetrators to justice. Swift and impartial investigations into these incidents are critical to maintaining public trust and preventing further escalation.
CDS Africa also urges political leaders across all parties to engage their supporters in constructive dialogue and to prioritize national cohesion over partisan interests. The post-election period should serve as a time for healing, reflection, and collective action toward nation-building.
Ghana’s democracy has long been regarded as a beacon of hope and stability in Africa. As a nation, we cannot afford to jeopardize this legacy. We call on every Ghanaian to reject violence, uphold the rule of law, and work together to safeguard the principles that define us as a democratic state.
Let us remember that democracy is not about division but unity in diversity. CDS Africa remains committed to supporting efforts to promote peace, dialogue, and sustainable development across Ghana.
