EHCM Calls on Office of Special Prosecutor to Provide Real-Time Channels for Reporting Electoral Irregularities
The Election Has Consequences Movement (EHCM) has commended the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for its efforts to prevent corruption, fraud, and unfair practices in the upcoming December 7th, 2024 elections. However, EHCM has also called on the OSP to provide the public with real-time channels of correspondence to report any electoral irregularities.
According to a press release issued by the OSP, the office is poised to prevent, control, and repress corruption, fraud, and unfair practices in relation to the 2024 elections. The release also calls on all officers involved in the electoral process to refrain from falsifying vote counts or making false returns.
While EHCM applauds the OSP’s efforts, it has raised concerns about the lack of formalized structures for reporting electoral irregularities. EHCM has therefore called on the OSP to provide contact numbers, SMS, WhatsApp lines, and an active email address for real-time transmission of reports.
“We believe that with the provision of these media, the mandate of the Office of the Special Prosecutor can best be discharged,” said Erickson Ashiara, Press Secretary of EHCM. “The information needed would be available in record time, enabling prompt action to be taken.”
EHCM’s call comes as Ghana prepares to go to the polls on December 7th, 2024. The movement’s efforts aim to promote transparency, accountability, and fairness in the electoral process.
In a related development, the OSP has established a toll-free line – 0800-000-700 – for reporting corruption and corruption-related activities ¹. However, EHCM’s call for real-time channels of correspondence highlights the need for more comprehensive and accessible reporting mechanisms.
