Asanteman Should Credit NDC for the Developmental Projects in the Ashanti Region —Hon. Kwasi Oppong Fosu
Former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development under the NDC regime, Hon. Kwasi Oppong Fosu, has called on the people of Asanteman to acknowledge the substantial developmental contributions of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking on the Kessben Maakye Show, he talked about various projects executed by the NDC and emphasized that these efforts merit recognition and electoral support for former President John Dramani Mahama.
Hon. Fosu provided clarity on the starting of the Kejetia Market project, addressing claims that the initiative was started under former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
He refuted this assertion, stating that the market project was conceptualized and commenced during the NDC’s tenure.
He explained that as Minister for Local Government and Rural Development as at that time, he reviewed a bill brought forward by prominent leaders, including Nana Amoamahene and Tuffour, whose father served as a Member of Parliament.
After recognizing the project’s potential, he forwarded it to President Mahama, who adopted it as a legacy initiative.
Moreover, he outlined significant road infrastructure projects undertaken by the NDC in the Ashanti Region. These include the Obuasi to Kumasi, Konongo, Ejisu, Offinso, and Nkawie Roads.
He noted that some previously deteriorated roads, such as the stretch from Suame Roundabout to Sofoline and the Adum to Tech Road, were rehabilitated under the NDC.
Additionally, he emphasized the party’s efforts in addressing broken bridges and drainage issues, which had long been a challenge in the region.
The late President Jerry John Rawlings’ signed a barter trade agreement with East Germany, now Germany, involving coconuts in the Western Region in exchange for road construction in Kumasi, making it the first city in Ghana to benefit from such infrastructure.
Despite these achievements, Hon. Fosu expressed disappointment over the lack of electoral support for the NDC in the Ashanti Region. He lamented instances of hostility faced by NDC campaigners, including being pelted with stones during rallies, and questioned the fairness of such treatment.
“We have done so much for Asanteman, yet the votes do not reflect our contributions when it comes to elections. This is not fair,” he urged voters to reconsider their approach.
Finally, he appealed to the people of Asanteman to vote based on policies and developmental track records rather than party loyalty. He stressed that the progress of the Ashanti Region is critical to Ghana’s overall development, describing it as the nerve center of Ghana.
