The difference between the old musicians and the current generation of musicians lies in the quality of their chorus

Kunta Kinte, one-half of the iconic Ghanaian music duo Bradez, has shared his thoughts on what distinguishes today’s music scene from that of yesteryear.

According to Kunta Kinte, one key difference lies in the quality of the chorus, an aspect of music that the older generation of musicians, particularly in genres like highlife and hip-hop, handled with more finesse.

Kunta Kinte believes, is an area where older musicians had a unique strength that is sometimes missing in modern music

In contrast to the more organic, time-consuming songwriting process of the past, the current generation of musicians often relies heavily on technology and pre-made beats, which can sometimes limit the depth and originality of a chorus.

The prevalence of auto-tune, for instance, has altered the way artists approach melody, sometimes sacrificing vocal nuance for electronic perfection.

Speaking on Music Plus on Kessben TV Kunta said choruses today tend to be shorter, more repetitive, and often rely on electronic hooks rather than live instrumentation. While this approach certainly has its place in contemporary music, Kunta Kinte believes that the older generation had a more intricate understanding of melody and harmony, which allowed them to craft choruses that resonated on a deeper level.

For instance, the melodies in highlife and hiplife—two genres that have defined Ghana’s musical landscape—are known for their richness and complex structure. These genres often used intricate instrumentation and harmonies that made their choruses stand out. This is something that Kunta Kinte feels is missing in the current wave of music, which can sometimes prioritize rhythm and beat over melody.

Kunta has recently released a new song titled “I DEY FOR YOU” featuring Kwaku Darlington.
