Frank Otoo Acheampong Details NDC’s Transformative Health Sector Achievements

Dr. Frank Otoo Acheampong, a communication member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and lecturer at Spiritan University, has outlined his party’s significant contributions to the health sector.

Speaking on the NDC’s achievements, Dr. Acheampong acknowledged former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s establishment of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). However, he emphasized that the NDC played a critical role in enhancing the policy.

“I agree that President Kufuor initiated the NHIS policy, but it had limitations. Initially, the card could only be used within a person’s district. The NDC expanded the policy nationwide, allowing Ghanaians to access healthcare anywhere in the country,” he explained.

Dr. Acheampong also discussed the NDC’s efforts to improve nursing education infrastructure. He highlighted the construction of health facilities for nursing training colleges across Ghana, which he claimed contributed to the overall growth of the health sector.

To achieve this vision, former President John Mahama worked closely with health professionals and leaders in the Ministry of Health.

According to him, the decision to replace the nursing allowance with a loan system was part of a broader plan to use the funds for building additional facilities to accommodate more nursing students.

To realize this vision, former President John Mahama collaborated with health professionals and health ministry leaders to replace nurses’ allowances with a loan system.

“These trained nurses would ultimately care for the growing population, ensuring better healthcare delivery across the country,” he added.

He criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for using this policy as propaganda during the 2016 election campaigns.

Dr. Acheampong praised John Mahama for constructing major health facilities, such as the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra and another in Fomena. He noted that the UGMC played a vital role in saving lives during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, he mentioned the expansion of the Wa Regional Hospital to accommodate more medical practitioners and provide quality care for patients.

“John Mahama focuses on the future, not just the present. Regarding contributions to the health sector, the NDC has done exceptionally well,” he said, applauding the former president’s forward-thinking approach.

Dr. Acheampong concluded by urging Ghanaians to vote for John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming elections, emphasizing his proven dedication to improving the country’s healthcare system.
