Independent Candidate Abdul Rauf Mumuni Discusses Vision for Ayawaso West Wuogon and Free SHS Review
Mr. Abdul Rauf Mumuni, an Independent Parliamentary Candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, has expressed optimism about his campaign and shared his vision for the constituency during a recent dialogue organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE). Despite the absence of other candidates at the event, Mr. Mumuni stated that the dialogue offered a valuable platform to engage with constituents and address their concerns.
Speaking on the significance of the event, Mr. Mumuni noted, “Even if you have a meeting of only two people, they can go out and sell your message to the whole constituency. Numbers are not what matters most; it is about explaining your vision and addressing key questions from the people present.” He commended the NCCE for organizing the dialogue and encouraged more such interactions to foster transparency and accountability in governance.
Highlighting the importance of the Right to Information (RTI) law, Mr. Mumuni emphasized that it empowers citizens to demand transparency from their representatives. He urged the NCCE to regularly facilitate engagements between MPs, District Chief Executives, and constituents to ensure accountability.
On the subject of education, Mr. Mumuni called for a review of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy to address infrastructure challenges and improve the quality of education. He proposed a temporary suspension of the program to allow for adequate planning and infrastructure development, stating, “If we put the Free SHS away for two years, draw a comprehensive plan, and relaunch it, we will achieve better outcomes.”
He criticized the current double-track system, suggesting alternative solutions such as shift systems during the day to ensure continuous education without interruptions. Mr. Mumuni also lauded the Ministry of Education’s efforts to introduce a new curriculum but stressed the need for reforms to maintain high standards in education.
“In our era, we used touch lights and candles to learn, but today, technology has made education more accessible. With a proper review, we can maintain the quality of education and better prepare our youth for the future,” he added.
As the December 7 elections draw closer, Mr. Mumuni remains committed to his vision of transparent leadership and addressing the pressing issues facing the constituency. He believes engaging directly with constituents and prioritizing their concerns will give him an edge in the polls.
