Youth Transform Waste into Wealth: Dziko Center’s Innovative Recycling Initiative
The Dziko Center for Climate Justice, in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Regional Leadership Center, has launched the “Turn Plastic to Purpose” project. This innovative program has empowered 50 youth from the Pokuase community with a 10-day intensive training program, tackling plastic waste management and promoting sustainable practices.
Participants learned to transform discarded materials into valuable products, reducing waste and fostering entrepreneurship. Remarkable transformations included:
- Sachet water bags into reusable tote bags
- Rice sacks into stylish handbags
- Old jeans into trendy backpacks
Mrs. Dzideidei Senaya, Co-founder of the Dziko Center for Climate Justice, emphasized the importance of community involvement. “Many believe community development, particularly sanitation, is solely the government’s responsibility. However, everyone has a role to play. It’s encouraging to see youth embracing this initiative with enthusiasm and eagerness to learn.”
Mary Lancelot, Entrepreneur and Facilitator at Dziko Center for Climate Justice, highlighted the project’s focus on promoting a circular economy and sustainability. “This innovative initiative will create employment opportunities for youth and inspire positive change, contributing to a greener future for Ghana.”
