EC disqualifies GFP’s replacement flagbearer Roman Dada over alleged document irregularities
Due to mistakes and purported irregularities found in his candidacy credentials, Philip Appiah Kubi, the Ghana Freedom Party’s (GFP) alternative flagbearer, has been disqualified by the country’s Electoral Commission (EC).
During a news conference on Tuesday, November 12, EC Chair Jean Mensa made this announcement, stressing that the party’s submission was carefully examined before being disqualified.
Jean Mensa pointed out that while the EC gave the GFP a chance to address the problems, several anomalies could not be disregarded.
Madam Mensa clarified that although the GFP attempted to resolve some of the disparities, some of Mr. Kubi’s documents were determined to be “illegitimate” under the country’s electoral laws.
After the death of Akua Donkor the party needed a new candidate. In response, the EC gave the GFP an extra 10 days to propose a candidate, and Mr. Kubi was chosen.
But after looking over Mr. Kubi’s application, the EC found a number of problems that went beyond simple typographical errors.
Jean Mensa explained that despite the GFP’s attempts to modify documents with significant legal problems, the EC is obligated to uphold electoral integrity and could not accept them.
