Lawyer Ohene Gyan Condemns Speaker Bagbin’s Leadership

Lawyer Ohene Amankwah Gyan has stated that the Speaker of Parliament, Honourable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, is the major cause of the conflict between the majority and minority positions in parliament.

Speaking on Kessben TV’s Maakye show on Friday, he expressed his views on the ongoing parliamentary issue between Ghana’s two leading parties, the NPP and the NDC.

According to Lawyer Gyan, the Speaker has the authority to decide and control what happens in parliament. He argued that Bagbin could have used his power to resolve the matter privately before the press conference and then recalled business meeting.

Kwame Owusu. Dankwa, the host of the show, mentioned that Hon. Bagbin had stated during a press conference held on Wednesday, November 7, 2024, that he is not the one to decide which party holds the majority and minority positions.

Moreover, Lawyer Gyan added, “I expected the Speaker of Parliament to invite both majority and minority leaders to retract the statement he made at the press conference.”

Lawyer Gyan urged the Speaker to adhere to the Supreme Court’s stay of execution order. He suggested that Bagbin should have used his power as the Speaker of Parliament because he believes in the supremacy of Ghana’s constitution and the institutions it has created.

He emphasized that Mr. Speaker should have set aside his personal reservations, even if he had his own conclusions. This, he argued, was an opportunity for Bagbin to play a non-partisan role.

Lawyer Gyan further stated, “Alban Bagbin does not want to accept that the Supreme Court, which is the highest body of the judiciary, has power over parliament. These two arms of government are of equal importance in Ghana.”

“Alban Bagbin feels bigger than the Supreme Court,” Lawyer Gyan stressed.

He added that there was no need for the press conference that preceded the recalled business meeting. According to him, Bagbin’s posture at the press conference was inconsistent with his statements.

He also criticized the Speaker for quoting former U.S. President Barack Obama, saying, “We should build strong institutions, not strong individuals.”

In conclusion, Lawyer Gyan described the Speaker of Parliament, Honourable Bagbin, as hypocritical in his actions. He urged that all leadership issues be resolved before the upcoming election.
