The Leadership Deficit in Klottey Korle Constituency

A very vibrant city filled with a constantly changing population of a variety of nationals from different parts of West Africa, with the need for bold and proactive leadership, Klottey Korle constituency can be described as a ‘sleeping economic giant’.

A closer look at the revenue generating channels for Klottey Korle constituency, buttresses the agenda for rapid growth and development. With many banks, corporate entities and small & medium enterprises (SMEs) located in Klottey Korle, the property rate accrued annually should warrant visible development in the area.

With a government body, the Klottey Korle Municipal Assembly (KoKMA), established to facilitate development in this area, one would expect a continuous improvement of the standards of living and conditions of doing business in Klottey Korle; for both residents and business owners respectively. But, the situation is far from that. Because, the remains one very essential part to complement the efforts of the Municipal Assembly by liaising with the people to understand their needs and requests, and echo them to the legislative arm of government for consideration as deemed fit. This is the office of the Member of Parliament (M.P).

The Member of Parliament is the Chief Advocate for the constituency. Advocacy is the machine that drives change and development in every human institution. But, without consistent and timely advocacy on the actual needs of the people, the real problems or challenges will become legend and be left to the whispering masses to endure without end. Advocacy is a loud call to the powers that may be on what needs to be done and when it should be done. Therefore, advocacy can never be underestimated in effective leadership or governance; nor in this article.

The challenges faced by many residents and businesses in Klottey Korle have been left in the dark with only temporary gimmicks for television. Some include the poor working conditions at the Odawna Market, the rise in teenage pregnancy and transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STI), lack of affordable health care for the many low income earners and Zongo communities, the growing unemployment rate among the youth in the area, flooding, etc. many of which remain silent at Parliament.

And, as residents and business persons situated in Klottey Korle constituency approach the elections, the need for a vocal, concerned and down to earth representative at parliament becomes more obvious. Even, with a sitting Member of Parliament in the person of Dr. Ezanetor Rawlings, many challenges and recurring problems remain ever present in the rich constituency.
