Central Medical Stores Fire: ASEPA Demands Justice and Transparency

The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has held a press conference to address the lingering issue of the 2015 Central Medical Stores fire in Tema, Ghana. The fire, which occurred on January 13, 2015, destroyed thousands of medical supplies worth over GH¢273 million, sparking widespread concern and outrage.

Background of the Incident

The Central Medical Store served as the primary storage facility for Ghana Health Services (GHS) and contained essential medications for diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and Ebola. Preliminary investigations by the Ghana National Fire Service suggested arson, and 12 individuals, including the head of the Central Medical Stores, were interdicted.

Controversy Surrounding Caleb Romeo Kofi Tetteh

One of the indicted individuals, Caleb Romeo Kofi Tetteh, was transferred to the Ministry of Health as Acting Head of Procurement instead of facing prosecution. This move has raised eyebrows, especially considering his alleged involvement in the Sputnik V vaccines scandal, which led to Ghana losing millions of dollars.

ASEPA’s Demands

ASEPA is calling for:

  • Immediate Release of the EOCO Report: ASEPA demands the release of the comprehensive investigations report on the Central Medical Stores fire.
  • Prosecution of Indicted Individuals: ASEPA seeks the immediate arrest and prosecution of Caleb Romeo Kofi Tetteh and his 11 alleged accomplices.
  • Release of the Sputnik V Investigations Report: ASEPA demands transparency regarding the Sputnik V scandal and the termination of Caleb Kofi Tetteh’s appointment.

International Community Involvement

The international community, including the United States and the United Kingdom, has expressed concern over the incident, having invested significant funds in the Central Medical Stores.

Conclusion

ASEPA’s press conference highlights the need for transparency and accountability in addressing the Central Medical Stores fire. The organization urges the media to continue shedding light on this matter, ensuring that those responsible face justice and that the investments of international partners do not go to waste.
