Christian Atsu remembered at 46th CAF General Assembly

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee paid tribute to the late Christian Atsu during its General Assembly meeting in Ethiopia on October 22, 2024.

Atsu, a former Newcastle United player, tragically passed away at age 31 after being found under the rubble of a devastating earthquake in Turkey in February 2023.

At the meeting, CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, alongside other members, expressed deep sorrow over his untimely death and lauded his significant contributions to African football and humanitarian causes.

Atsu enjoyed a distinguished career, representing Ghana’s national team in major tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

He was notably named the Best Player of the 2015 AFCON.

Beyond his achievements in the field, he was actively involved in charitable work, particularly supporting underprivileged children in Ghana through organisations like Arms Around the Child.

The committee also recognised the widespread mourning following Atsu’s passing and observed a moment of silence in his memory. They extended heartfelt condolences to his family and the broader football community, emphasising that his legacy in football and humanitarian efforts will endure.
