Renowned Lawyer Calls for Strategic Solution to Ghana’s Galamsey Menace
Human rights lawyer Charles Juanah has urged Ghanaians to adopt a collective approach to combat the rampant illegal mining (galamsey) plaguing the country.
Juanah cautioned that demonstrations and short-term crackdowns won’t suffice, emphasizing the need for a strategic solution. “Galamsey has been a persistent problem since its inception; a two-month crackdown won’t solve it.”
He warned that partisan politics could fuel violence and called on citizens to unite against the menace. Juanah also criticized some individuals, including pastors, for politicizing the issue.
“The solution to this problem must be a strategic move,” Juanah stressed. “You don’t solve a problem with a bigger problem.”
He advised Ghanaians to wait for a new president with a four-year mandate to tackle the issue effectively, rather than relying on temporary measures.
Juanah’s comments come as concerns over galamsey’s environmental and economic impacts continue to grow. His call for collective action and strategic planning has sparked hopes for a lasting solution to this national issue.
