Ghana Marks World Heart Day 2024 with a Call to Action
Ghana has joined the global community to commemorate World Heart Day 2024, with the Ministry of Health collaborating with the World Heart Federation, Ghanaian Society of Cardiology, and Stroke Association Support Network to launch the event. The campaign’s theme, “Use Heart for Action,” aims to support individuals in caring for their heart and empowering them to urge leaders to take cardiovascular health seriously [1).
Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, a renowned physician and cardiothoracic surgeon, emphasized the importance of a balanced diet in preventing heart attacks. “Eating fruits, vegetables, and maintaining a balanced diet is crucial for heart health,” he noted. He also highlighted the role of agriculture and transportation sectors in providing nutritious food and ensuring people’s wellbeing.
Key Factors Contributing to Heart Problems
- Distress during pregnancy, affecting both mother and baby
- Alcohol consumption
- Smoking
- Diet and lacking essential nutrients
Professor Boateng appealed to the government and stakeholders to reduce increments in agriculture and accommodation costs and prioritize cardiovascular disease prevention, treatment, and control.
The World Heart Federation estimates that cardiovascular disease kills over 20.5 million people annually, with the majority of deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries ¹. However, 80% of premature deaths from cardiovascular disease can be prevented by making lifestyle changes.
The Ghanaian Society of Cardiology is working tirelessly to promote heart health in Ghana. World Heart Day is celebrated on September 29 to raise awareness about heart disease and advocate for prevention [8).
