Produce evidence of discrepancies in voter register – Kofi Tonto to NDC

A Government Spokesperson, Kofi Tonto, has challenged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to provide evidence of discrepancies in the Electoral Commission’s register.

Mr. Tonto, appearing on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on Wednesday. September 18, 2024, defended the commission chaired by Jean Mensa, stating that it is doing its constitutional duty.

“Per the process or the regulations, the EC will go through every single process to register qualified candidates,” he said.

The NPP loyalist explained that the Electoral Commission is mandated by law to compile a provisional voters register within three months of the registration period’s end. This register includes voters’ names, ages, sexes, residential addresses, and photographs.

“The commission shall…compile the provisional register of voters in the country…At the end of the compilation of the provisional register…a copy of the provisional register shall be given to each registered political party,” he quoted from the law.

He highlighted the purpose of this exercise: “to help the political stakeholders look at the provisional register and raise any concerns they have.”

However, Kofi Tonto noted that the process doesn’t end there, as the Constitutional Review (CR) outlines procedures for correcting errors in the register.

“It goes further to show us who and what we must do to correct any challenges from errors in register…” he added.
