Join nationwide demo against EC – Mahama urges Ghanaians
Former President John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged party supporters and all Ghanaians to participate in the party’s nationwide demonstration against the Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday.
He emphasised the need for pressure on the EC to ensure transparency and accountability, stating that a forensic audit is necessary to guarantee the credibility of the next election.
Mr Mahama made these remarks during a mini rally at Amanfro park in the Ga South Municipality on Sunday, as part of his ongoing Greater Accra regional tour.
“The only way to get the EC to sit up is to put pressure on them and that is why on Tuesday you must all join the demonstrations across the country and it’s not only NDC people alone but all Ghanaians,” he said
The NDC has expressed concerns over the EC preparedness for the upcoming elections, citing issues with voter registration, electoral reforms, and transparency.
The party has been advocating for a forensic audit of the EC to ensure the credibility of the electoral process but the EC has been adamant in granting the request of the NDC.
The National Chairman of the party, Johnson Aseidu Nketiah told the media after submitting the nomination forms of the party’s flag bearer to the EC last week, said, “We have serious concerns about the process so far, and I believe we are engaging, and that is the purpose of the engagement, so that we can get mutual conclusions that are acceptable to everybody.
Mr Nketiah added that, “We are not willing to give up our rights at all getting into this elections. And so we are hopeful that the commission will listen and listen to us very well and discharge their responsibilities in a manner that will be satisfactory to all participating parties.”
