Jama’s Yam Festival Celebrates Heritage and Empowers Youth
The people of Jama in the Savannah Region of Ghana celebrated their annual Yam Festival on September 10, 2024. The festival, led by Paramount Chief Nnaa Professor Lanjagor Karley II, showcased the region’s rich cultural heritage and agricultural traditions.
Empowering Youth for Sustainable Development
This year’s theme, “Empowering the Youth for Sustainable Development,” highlighted the importance of investing in the future generation. Paramount Chief Karley II emphasized the need to empower youth for sustainable development, stating that “in the heart of the young person lies the potential for greatness.”
Warning Against Impersonators
Paramount Chief Karley II also issued a strong warning against anyone attempting to impersonate him as the paramount chief of the traditional area. He urged the community to disregard any impersonators, emphasizing that he is the only rightful holder of the title.
Celebrating Agricultural Heritage
The Yam Festival is an annual celebration that marks the introduction of new yams and expresses gratitude for a bountiful harvest. The festival featured various activities, including a procession of yams, traditional dances, music, and storytelling. This year’s event also included quiz competitions, games, and culinary contests, showcasing the community’s skills in pounding fufu and preparing yam dishes.
Community Comes Together
The festival brought together political leaders, educationists, and community members, including the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the Bole Bamboi Constituency, Hon Raphael Kumah Abolasom, and the District Chief Executive, Hon Veronica Alele Heming. A youth brass band group from St Anthony of Padua Sec/Tech School, Bamboi, provided entertainment during the festival.
