We’ll pursue legal action against culprits of recent assaults on firefighters – GNFS
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has strongly condemned the recent separate incidents of assault on its officers while they were performing their duties.
A viral video on social media on September 3, show a firefighter, ADO II Abdul Aziz Annor being assaulted by a commercial driver and mate while he was replenishing a fire truck at La Palm T-Junction in Accra.
A statement released by the GNFS on September 10 said the officer who was assaulted sustained fractured ankle and has been scheduled for a surgery at the 37 military hospital this week.
The press release noted that the suspects who have been arrested were granted bail with sureties of GHC5000 each.
They will reappear in court on October 24, 2024.
On September 5, another incident of assault on firefighters was reported. Residents of Dansoman roundabout physically and verbally assaulted firefighters while they were on duty.
“Per the GNFS’ release, the misunderstanding occurred when the Fire truck temporarily left to replenish water.
“Despite the attack, the firefighters, with the help of two (2) additional fire trucks, managed to control and extinguish the fire, preventing further damage to nearby properties,” the release noted.
GNFS said it has reported the matter to the police for further investigations to be conducted.
However, the Service has cautioned the general public to refrain from assaulting its officers as it is unlawful and will be met with strict legal action.
“The GNFS reminds the public that assaulting firefighters is unlawful and will be met with strict legal action. Our personnel risk their lives daily to protect citizens and property, and they deserve the respect and support from the public.
“Management of GNFS is committed to providing the best care for the injured officer and will pursue legal action to ensure justice for all affected personnel.
“Management by this statement is cautioning the general public that it shall defend its personnel performing their lawful duties at all times and fight culprits of firefighter assaults with all its might under the law,” the statement added
