A Law Clerk of a Law Firm in Accra Henry Odartey Lamptey has been arraigned before a Circuit Court in Accra for allegedly forging the signature of the Deputy Judicial Secretary of the country and other High Court orders.

He was admitted to bail of 500,000 cedis with two sureties to be justified.

The Court further ordered that one of the sureties must be a public servant earning not less than three thousand cedis per month, and the payslip to be submitted should be endorsed by his or her Head of Department.

Odartey Lamptey pleaded not guilty to eight counts of forgery of Judicial or Official Documents. The Prosecutor ASP Kofi Anane, narrating the facts said somewhere in June this year, the Police received a petition from the Judicial Secretary of Ghana that the accused person and his accomplices currently at large were engaged in the forgery of marriage and divorce certificates, Court Orders and other official documents.

ASP Anane said on receipt of the petition, the Police mounted surveillance. He continued that on  August 13, this year, another accused being tried in another court, Seidu Adams, was arrested after he forged a letter dated November 22, 2023, with the Judicial Service seal purported to have been signed by the Deputy Judicial Secretary.

On his arrest, a search conducted in his bag revealed a number of documents including Court Orders purported to have been signed and given under the hands of Justice Patrick and Justice Mariam Sammo of the High Court, Marriage Certificates, Divorce Certificates, letters purported to have been signed by the Judicial Secretary and letters purported to be from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly marriage department.

Seidu Adams allegedly mentioned Henry Odartey Lamptey as his accomplice and he was arrested last Thursday, August 29. The Prosecution said Odartey Lamptey allegedly admitted the offence during investigations and further stated that he charges 300 cedis for the forged AMA letters.

The accused is said to have led the police to his office and home where Divorce Certificates from Berekum and Madina District Courts, marriage certificates, customary marriage, and divorce forms were retrieved. He will reappear before the court on October 7.
