Voter Transfer Saga: EC suspends Pusiga District Officer, assures of robust 2024 Register

The Electoral Commission (EC) says it has concluded its investigation into the alleged voter transfer incident reported on August 26 by the Northern Regional Director.

The complaints involved voters from two polling stations in the Tamale South constituency and one polling station in the Sagnarigu constituency being transferred to the Pusiga constituency in the Upper East Region without their knowledge.

According to the EC’s preliminary findings, 38 individuals used an electoral commission official’s credentials to effect the transfers.

The records of these transfers are captured in the Voter Management System audit logs.

The Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, addressing the media in Accra on Monday, 2nd September, said a look at the verification done during the transfer process shows that the photos of the voters from the voter ID cards were used for official verification and to effect the transfers.

To prevent similar incidents, the EC has suspended the Pusiga District Electoral Officer and introduced a liveness check in the verification process to ensure biometric data is captured from a live, present human being.

The EC aims to maintain the integrity of the electoral process and prevent future unauthorised transfers.

Dr. Asare further noted that allegations of the bloated register being propagated are untrue. He assured that the 2024 register is robust and credible.
