“Abantu for Development Celebrates 20 Years of Empowering Women

Abantu for Development, a leading gender and policy advocacy organization, marked its 20th anniversary and launched the second edition of the Women’s Manifesto. The event was a milestone in the organization’s journey to strengthen women’s capacity in decision-making and address inequalities.

Convenor of the Women’s Manifesto Coalition, Madam Hamida Harrison, expressed joy at the accomplishments, particularly the passage of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equality) Bill. This landmark legislation ensures women’s representation in major decision-making organs of public life.

Harrison noted that despite progress, Ghana still grapples with gender inequality, particularly in accessing public leadership and securing livelihoods in the market economy. She emphasized the need for robust political will to address emerging issues creating new layers of inequalities.

International consultant and chairperson of the National Peace Council’s Conflict Resolution Committee, Emminence Joana Opare, highlighted the importance of implementing the affirmative law. She emphasized key areas from the Women’s Manifesto, including economic empowerment, land rights, social policy, political representation, human rights, and media representation.

Opare urged women to remain vigilant until the bill is fully implemented, ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.

The celebration was a testament to Abantu for Development’s dedication to promoting women’s rights and social justice, inspiring a new wave of change-makers to continue the fight for equality.”
